Fevers Are Actually Beneficial to Human Health

Image via Wikipedia

A fever may accompany any type of health disorder.  Fever as a sign of infection is part of the body’s defense against disease.   It is highly beneficial as it helps the body get rid of accumulated toxins creating the infection or causing other types of cellular or physical distresses.  Fever may reduce the growth or kill some disease-causing pathogens. It may enhance the immune defenses by increasing the production of interferon, a chemical that inhibits viral reproduction. Fever accompanying an acute illness is not necessarily a cause for concern, yet many people become frightened when fever occurs and believe the slightest elevation in temperature should be brought down immediately.  Instead it is important to pay attention to the cause of the illness and try to aid the healing efforts of the body. As long as it is not too high, the fever is best left to continue its work as part of the body’s efforts to heal itself.

Three homeopathic remedies may be considered for the following symptoms causing concern and needing remedy, Aconite, Belladonna, or Nux Vomica.

If a person suffers conditions that arise from exposure to dry and cold air or wind, especially if the person has been perspiring during the exposure, such as if a person has gone outside without much clothing and then comes home with a fever, consider Aconite. Aconite works well to reduce symptoms and discomforts of anxiety, restlessness, and fear arising from having a fever. Other symptoms Aconite helps alleviate is loss of sleep, sometimes occurring due to awakening to throw off the covers, chilling, and covering up again throughout the night. If a person feels mentally alert but becomes frightened and experiences dry skin, dry coughs, dry mouth and a strong thirst for cold drinks, Aconite would be effective in reducing these symptoms.

When a person suffers a red flushed face, hot skin, reddened mucous membranes, and glassy eyes with dilated pupils, Belladonna would be the useful remedy. Belladonna helps people experiencing mental dullness, who may not fully comprehend what is going on around them, and who become restless and agitated. Belladonna is the most commonly given medicine for people with simple fever.

The chief indication of a fever needing Nux vomica is extreme chilliness that is worsened by uncovering or even slightly moving the blankets. The person can’t move under the covers without setting off a wave of chilliness. The fever symptoms tend to begin after overeating, overdrinking, lacking sleep, or using drugs, either prescription or recreational. The person may also have various digestive symptoms such as constipation, nausea, and heaviness of the head.  Symptoms appear worse in the morning and in the open air.

Fever is often associated with the flu. One of the greatest success stories of homeopathic medicine was its treatment of an influenza epidemic during the 1917-1918 flu season. Records maintained by government medical officers at the time showed that the proportion of patients who died from the flu or its complications while under professional homeopathic care was substantially lower than those who received regular medical treatment.

Homeopathic remedies are a natural way to relieve the symptoms and discomforts of common disorders and are easily assimilated by the body.
