Support your immune system with rich fruits and vegetables

Colorful veggies for sale in Daley PlazaSupporting our immune system with vital nutrients insures a healthy body free of disease or able to fight off disease when it occurs. Cancer is on everyone’s mind as it now affects the young as well as the old. Our immune systems do great battle against cancer, but do require back-up assistance with an army of supportive nutrients free of other toxic chemical coatings that require additional effort to detoxify.

Healthy foods are our first line of defense followed by supplement support and perhaps drugs when necessary.

Fruits, rich in varied and dark colors, support our immune systems boosting it with many anticancer nutrients high in antioxidants and phytonutrients. Increase your intake of berries like blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Organic ones are best to reduce herbicide contamination. These foods round up free radicals. They also help to slow bacteria growth that can lead to infections, especially of the bladder and kidneys.

Grapes contain antioxidants that protect against cancer. Purple grapes are best as they supply selenium and quercetin, slow tumor growth, and enhance natural killer cell activity. Grapes, strawberries, raspberries, black currants, and walnuts provide ellagic acid, a powerful anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer nutrient.

Other great fruits for fighting illness include watermelon, lemons, limes, oranges, grapes with seeds, and grapefruit. These fruits will increase your intake of Vitamin C, lycopene, and glutathione, all naturally supporting immune function.

Ingesting plenty of these fruits as well as richly colored vegetables and dark leafy greens will help you recover faster if you should become ill. If these fruits and vegetables are hard to digest, try blending as a smoothie with yogurt, milk, or fruit juice, even pure water for greater nutrient absorption. These can all be lightly cooked for easier digestion and absorption for those with compromised digestive systems.

We often cannot control our exposures to environmental toxins. But we can choose to eat more of the great fruits and vegetables that help our immune system warrior cells win the battle.

Our returning firefighters will need to begin a regimen of increasing these great foods to begin clearing out their lungs, detoxing their livers and kidneys, and cleansing their skin from their exposures to so much carcinogenic smoke, dust, and the stress of fighting their war against wildfires.

We all need to recognize the importance of the best foods that serve our health as well as our emotional and psychological well-being. Bring color into your lives each day. Fruits and vegetables. You will feel good and you will be healthier.
