Great Fruits Supporting Digestion

Orange & GreenRemember the old time mantra:  “You are what you eat.”  Today this no longer applies exactly.  While it may be true in the sense that if one eats a lot of fried, greasy food, their skin will take on a greasy composition.  Too much simple carbohydrates including lots of sugary foods will lead one to take on the appearance of a variety of weighty shapes.  Today, the new mantra is “You are what you absorb.”  Without proper absorption of nutrients and efficient digestion, a person’s health could face decline and subsequent loss of well-being.
Two foods supporting good digestion include papaya and pineapple.  In future articles I will provide information on other digestive supporting foods so that we all can enjoy our forthcoming summer with vigor.
Papaya is a wonderful food that begins the process of digestion.  Papaya is high in vitamin content especially Vitamins C and A.  It is rich in potassium and has slightly lower levels of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron.  Minerals are our electrical conductors enabling cell-to-cell communication.  Papaya helps to neutralize excess stomach acid often the cause of digestive distress.  This in turn can assist in calming down pancreatic imbalances so important in the breakdown of fats through bile.
Papaya is known to provide antiseptic and soothing effects on the tender mucosal linings of the digestive tract.  Japanese studies found that slightly green papayas provide bacteriostatic properties slowing down the development of intestinal infections, some that may be causing infectious diarrhea. And for you teens, papaya has been shown to improve skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and furunculosis due to its high levels of a natural source of Vitamin A.
Pineapple is another fruit aiding in digestion.  It is rich in Vitamins C, B1, B6, and a good source of folate.  Important minerals in pineapple are manganese, copper, potassium, magnesium, and iron.  The tartness of the pineapple enables the action of Vitamin C and the citric and malic acids actually alkalize stomach acid:  a natural antacid!  Bromelin (AKA bromelain) in pineapple breaks down proteins in digestion.  Faulty breakdown of our foods causes fermentation leading to gassiness, bloating, and discomfort.
If you suffer from low levels of stomach acid, pineapple is your go-to fruit.  Be sure to eat it fresh for the best benefits.  Drinking fresh pineapple juice before meals helps reduce appetite and could really help lose unwanted weight.  The mineral manganese supports reproductive health and the high content of Vitamin C slows down or eliminates the development of nitrosamines, chemical reactions between proteins and nitrites that can lead to stomach cancer.
Pineapples ripen on the vine, so when purchasing, choose fully ripe ones for the best benefit.  They do not ripen off the vine like bananas do.  With some hesitationI recently purchased a rather green pineapple, but upon cutting it open, it was perfectly ripe.  Give one the smell test to be sure.  It should smell quite “pineapply!”
These two fruits abundant this time of year will begin a healing process if you suffer from digestive disorders.
