We spend over $80 Billiona year on diets. That is the same amount we spend annually on the Iraq War.

Why are you losing the war on fat? Because we don’t deal with the underlying cause: stress. Stress causes your body to crave quick energy – carbohydrates. Stress also shuts down the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby shutting down full digestive function. Most destructively, stress puts you in a survival response of reacting to what’s in front of you causing you to forget all your commitments.

It gets worse

Chronic stress becomes a learned state reinforced by the soft tissue tension in your body. Much like a lab rat, you reinforce the stress response while anchoring it in your fascial system (the connective tissue that holds everything together and the organ of stress). As you continue to wind yourself tighter, you continue to gain weight. The latest fad diet works for a while. Deprivation only enhances the survival response.

A simple solution

Trying to get rid of stress in your life never works. It is impossible to be completely unstressed. The two secrets are: unlearning the stress response; and removing the chronic stress from your body, which perpetuates the stress.

You learned to adapt the stress/survival response as your default state. You can unlearn it. Back in the mid 1990s at my Scottsdale Institute for Health and Medicine, we had the leading Mindfulness Stress Reduction Program in the country. People didn’t come to us to lose weight, yet when they learned how to make relaxation their default, gentle weight loss was often a consequence.

In over 30 years of treating thousands of clients for all variations of stress, I have seen hundreds lose weight they had struggled with because they lost their chronic stress. Good bodywork removes chronic stress and teaches the body/mind when not to go into a stress response.

When I had my clinic in Scottsdale, AZ, I had a constant string of women coming to me to get what their friends got from their Rolfing – the reduction or removal of their cellulite. Losing the cellulite was rarely an immediate effect; it usually occurred months later. As a client’s body continued to relax, the body’s physiology got the message that they didn’t need to store fat for the ever-present survival response. Their bodies increased circulation from better movement patterns and slowly burned away the old fat.
